Amsterdam News
In 1936, The Amsterdam News became the first -- and remains the only -- Black-owned and operated newspaper to be unionized in all departments. Achieved at a time when Jim Crow was as strongly present in the North as in the South, the effort to gain recognition and fair working conditions for the editorial staff was a community and labor-wide effort, and the first in which guild members achieved substantial gains in a written agreement.
Today, the Guild represents over a dozen employees in research, reporting, editing, photography, advertising sales, and circulation.
Know your Weingarten Rights: As a member of the NewsGuild of New York, you have the right to demand representation.
I HAVE A RIGHT TO UNION REPRESENTATION
If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated, or affect my personal working conditions, I request that my steward or union officer be present at the meeting. Without representation, I choose not to answer any questions.
